New Orleans Hornets Getting Inside 2009-03-30

New Orleans Hornets Getting Inside 2009-03-30
The Hornets are beginning a three-game road trip that begins a season-ending stretch in which they play seven of 10 on the road.

They're feeling a lot better about the stretch drive after getting what coach Byron Scott called their best win of the season -- a 90-86 home victory against the Southwest-Division leading Spurs despite the absence of three of the Hornets' key players.

Starters Tyson Chandler and Peja Stojakovic were sidelined by injury and sixth man James Posey was suspended for one game for throwing the basketball at an official during a 103-93 loss at New York on Friday.

"Obviously that wasn't the same team we saw (Sunday night)," Scott said of the Hornets' 48-hour turnaround. "Given the three guys that were missing and the importance of the game as we try to keep our heads above water until we get healthy, this is the biggest win of the season."

The Hornets (45-27) are tied with Utah for sixth place in the Western Conference and moved within two games of the Rockets and 2-1/2 of the Spurs in the Southwest.

"I look at our team as a wounded animal with our back to the wall," Scott said. "We have no choice but to come out fighting."

The Hornets play at the Kings Tuesday, at the Clippers Wednesday, and at the Warriors Friday.

HORNETS 90, SPURS 86: The Hornets held the Spurs to 39 second-half points as they rallied from a four-point halftime deficit to defeat the Spurs Sunday night in the New Orleans Arena.

Chris Paul and David West posted seven points each as the Hornets outscored the Spurs, 25-16, in the third quarter.

The Spurs got within one point three times during the fourth quarter, but could never pull even. After Matt Bonner's three-pointer cut a six-point Hornets lead in half, West made an 18-footer and Rasual Butler hit two free throws for a seven-point lead with 29 seconds left.

Manu Ginobili made a three-pointer and, after a Hornets turnover, Michael Finley made a three-pointer to get the Spurs within one with 17 seconds left.

Paul managed to dribble several seconds off the clock before being fouled by Ginobili. As he was fouled Paul threw the ball at the basket and the officials ruled he was shooting a three-pointer. Paul made all three free throws to seal the victory with seven seconds left.
